HOW MANY STEPS?

You surely have heard that you should get 10,000 steps a day. According to The Guardian, that number originated not in science but in a Japanese ad campaign from the 1960s.

Don’t worry, scientists are still in favor of walking — it’s just that they’d like to know with more precision how many steps are ideal for each of us. Maybe 10k is too many for some people and not enough for others.

Instead of fixating on 10k, they argued, maybe we should talk more about 5k because that seems to be the minimum for generating health benefits. And if you want to join the walking craze but find 10k intimidating, something between 6k and 8k may be a perfectly good goal, as long as you make enough effort to increase your heart rate.
