PROTEIN POWER
Everyone needs to consume protein, but the need seems to increase as we age, according to Kaiser Health News.
When the familiar RDAs — recommended dietary allowances — were introduced, they generally didn’t take older people into account. Oldsters need protein power more than ever because they experience events that can lead to muscle loss, such as a fracture that limits mobility. So physicians and nutrition experts are beginning to recommend significantly higher amounts — as much as 25 to 50 percent more than RDA.
Don’t think you can shake your way out of a break, either. The extra protein should come from real food, the experts say, not from protein shakes.
