A.I. AS DIAGNOSTIC TOOL

Misdiagnoses are common — and dangerous. Can artificial intelligence help? A U.S.-Chinese team recently published a study in the journal Nature Medicine saying they were able to get better diagnoses of common childhood illnesses from A.I. than from human doctors.

The team used Chinese data because they’ve got so many people there — and thus so many medical records — and fewer privacy protections to worry about. One reason to take a cautious approach: Computer scientists aren’t exactly sure how the system teaches itself.
